Formed by Council Member Melissa Mark-Viverito, the El Barrio/East Harlem Youth Violence Task Force is a diverse collaborative of youth and community organizations which aims to directly involve young people in the development of positive alternatives that will counter violence by engaging and empowering local youth.
WHAT WE HAVE DONE:
Since June of last year the Task Force has hosted several public community discussions on the rise in violence, where we heard directly from over 250 young people and other El Barrio/East Harlem residents. The participants of these meetings collectively identified a number of key issues that need to be addressed as we seek to mitigate violence among young people.
Those concerns have been formulated into the Task Force’s soon-to-be-released official platform. However, the work will not stop with the release of this document. We will begin amping up our efforts by involving young people as we seek to carry out some of the recommendations outlined in the platform. Stay tuned and get involved!
